Ministry of Defence indicated that Shaheed/Martyr is not defined anywhere and presently they are not issuing any order/notification to this effect in respect of Defence personnel. Similarly, no status of Shaheed/Martyr is given to the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and Assam Rifles (AR) personnel who are killed in action or any operation – Minister replied in Lok Sabha:-

Martyr Status

Will the Minister of HOME AFFAIRS be pleased to state:-
(a) the total number of personnel of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) who were accorded the martyr status since 1999, force and State-wise;
(b) whether the Government has any proposal to award martyr status to those who did not get the status of martyrs during the said period ; and
(c): if so, the details thereof ?

(a) to (c) : In the meeting of Committee of Secretaries held on 14/09/2011, Ministry of Defence indicated that Shaheed/Martyr is not defined anywhere and presently they are not issuing any order/notification to this effect in respect of Defence personnel. Similarly, no status of Shaheed/Martyr is given to the Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and Assam Rifles (AR) personnel who are killed in action or any operation. However, their families/Next of Kin are given full family pension under the Liberalized Pensionary Award (LPA) rules and lump sum ex-gratia compensation of Rupees fifteen lakh as per rules in addition to other benefits admissible.
